Monroe County receives 54.5 inches of rain on average. That ‘s almost 70% more rain per year than the rest of the United States. Excess rain collects on the surface and gathers in streams, rivers and creeks. This water eventually makes its way to the Little Tennessee River.

Rain water that soaks into the ground and saturates the soil provides groundwater to residential wells. There are 3,396 known residential wells that thousands of Monroe County Citizens rely on. Groundwater wells are especially vulnerable to pollutants because they are susceptible to pollutants

Approximately half of all streams surveyed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation were found to be “not supporting”. Those streams did not meet one or more water quality standards and require limits (TMDLs) for surface water pollutants.
